Esteemed Award Presented to Superior Court Judge

The award is considered to be one of the most prestigious that the high court bestows on “judges, attorneys and others who have provided exceptional service to Georgia’s judicial system and citizens”.


Atlanta Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Robert C. I. McBurney honored with Supreme Court of Georgia Supreme Court of Georgia's Amicus Curiae award.

  • McBurney presented award for his seven years of service as presiding officer of the Judicial Qualifications Commission of Georgia.
  • Honor comes two weeks after McBurney stepped down from role now filled by Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Brian Rickman.

Atlanta Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Robert C. I. McBurney has been awarded the Supreme Court of Georgia’s Amicus Curiae award.

Amid a standing ovation and thunderous applause, the high court bestowed the honor to McBurney for his leadership as presiding officer of the Judicial Qualifications Commission of Georgia Wednesday.

‘Dedicated Service’

Before hearing a second day of oral arguments for the month, justices kicked off the morning session by celebrating McBurney’s leadership on the state’s judicial watchdog hearing panel.

Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs offered remarks before presenting the McBurney with the award. Latin for “friend of the court,” the Amicus Curiae award is considered to be one of the most prestigious that the high court bestows on “judges, attorneys and others who have provided exceptional service to Georgia’s judicial system and citizens,” according to a statement by the court.

“He has fulfilled the the significant responsibilities placed upon him as presiding officer of the JQC Hearing Panel in the spirit of public service and transparency by making proceedings accessible to all,” Boggs said. “Now, therefore, be it resolved that the justices of the Supreme Court of Georgia express their profound appreciation for the dedicated service of the Honorable Robert C.I. McBurney to the state of Georgia in upholding the rule of law by protecting public trust and confidence in the judicial system. We hereby designate him Amicus Curiae of the Supreme Court of Georgia.”
